The NABV Mentoring Network is a core initiative of the National Association for Black Veterinarians (NABV), designed to foster meaningful, culturally responsive relationships that support the academic and professional success of Black individuals in veterinary medicine. and seeks to address the underrepresentation of Black professionals by providing consistent guidance, community, and resources.
This network is closely aligned with the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN), a nationwide, NIH-funded program that aims to diversify the biomedical and STEMM workforce through mentorship, networking, and professional development. Through this partnership, NABV participants gain access to a wide range of tools, including MyNRMN’s MyMentor guided virtual mentoring platform, structured group discussions, resume/CV builders, and professional development webinars. Mentoring connections are enhanced through customized prompts that support different career stages, from undergraduate to junior faculty, with an emphasis on cultural identity, stress management, perseverance, and inclusive leadership.
The NABV Mentoring Network is intentional about addressing the unique needs of Black students and professionals in veterinary science. It offers training on unconscious bias, fosters culturally responsive mentoring relationships, and promotes active engagement in career planning, research development, and community support. Members are encouraged to join cohorts, engage in virtual mentoring sessions, post projects and publications, and explore job and internship opportunities through the MyNRMN platform.
By joining the NABV Mentoring Network, participants become part of a national movement to cultivate excellence and equity in veterinary medicine. The network creates a safe, supportive, and empowering space where mentors and mentees grow together, guided by shared goals, mutual respect, and a collective commitment to diversifying the veterinary profession.
Founded by Dr. Annie J. Daniel, the program is anchored in evidence-based mentoring principles
